We Made It!

We were scared, tired, hungry, sad
We wanted our guardians, our moms, our dads
We tried our hardest
We cried
We laughed, shared, helped, hugged
We pressed on
We became confident, transparent, engaged
We learned about each other
ourselves
our cultures
our countries
our world
our future

And not only us, our students as well

My Story of Self

Posted on Updated on

I’m finally back home after spending five weeks living at Temple University as part of my institute work for Teach For America.  I was fortunate enough to be assigned to Pan American Academy Charter School.  This amazing school is a K -8 charter school and provides high-quality, bilingual education to over 700 students in eastern North Philadelphia.  I was part of a 5 person collaborative (lead by our amazing CMA, Katie who is also a Literacy Specialist at Pan Am) that was responsible for preventing “summer slide” for 21 students.

Here is a re-post of something that I wrote last Mother’s Day. Enjoy. And Happy Mother’s Day.

The Perks of Just Being

My husband, Devon, was up late last night and sent me  a link to this article on breastfeeding campaign posters created for a school project (applause, applause!!) and the “stir” they are causing.

Why Read?

Why read?

This was the question posed to my class by my Literary Criticism professor last Thursday.  We are tasked with writing down reasons why we read.  Of course, I got all geeky excited and wanted to write a thesis paper on the whole thing, but I decided that writing on here would probably garner more attention.

So, yes … why do we read?  Reading can start before we are born with parents reading to us in-utero as a way of bonding with their baby.  Shortly afterwards, we read to our babies, toddlers and school-aged children because we want them to learn to read.

Growing up in my house my mom and dad were constantly reading.  During the summer I would bring home stacks of books from the library and I always told my mom that if she wanted to lock me in McMahon Books at Christiana Mall (I think that I just dated myself there), I would be more than happy.  Both of my parents passed on their love of reading that sticks with me to this day.  I read constantly (click here to view my obsession) and am almost never without some sort of reading material.  Oh, and I’m an English major.

Devon was the one who read to the kids when they were little … that was his bonding time with them.  I loved listening to him read as they snuggled together … first one child, then two.  The man who only reads for information would be sitting there reading “Brown Bear, Brown Bear“, “Nightgown Countdown“, “Green Eggs and Ham“, “More, More, More! Said the Baby” and a variety of other books.  He preferred books that rhymed and the kids loved every minute.  As they became older, we would have Brennan practice reading to Cassie (which gave mom “Five Minutes Peace“).

Now, as we have all gotten older, Devon still reads for information only (i.e., news websites), Brennan reads for school only, and Cassie and I swap Young Adult books back and forth, trying to get certain books read before the movie comes out.

Some of my reasons for reading are:

  • for the sheer joy in learning something that I have never heard about.
  • for the great pleasure I have in sharing books with my daughter, especially when she swears that she won’t like a book and then drags me off to the library or bookstore for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the series.
  • because I’m an English major and I have been forced to read outside of my comfort zone (Beowulf, Macbeth, poems, plays, etc.).
  • because I just found out about Banned Books Week (I totally missed it!!) and now want to read all of the controversial books that are out there.
  • because I have found out that I love to sit in class and listen to everyone else’s opinions or take on a story that we have been assigned.
  • because I am now part of the book club at Goldey-Beacom College.
  • AND because I can totally lose myself in a book for a while and just relax (sometimes it is a long while and things don’t get done around the house … ).

Most of my reasons may seem superficial, but I truly do love to read and will read anything that is not nailed down … or at least give it a good look.

If you don’t read, start out slow with a magazine or newspaper.  You can also ask at the library what some of the most checked out books are right now.  Also, if you have seen the movie, go read the book … this will help you visualize what you are reading.

Whatever you do, enjoying a good book can change your life, which really is a perk of just being.❤
